Memphis Trade Conley in Preparation for Ja Morant

Memphis Trade Conley
By Isaac E

The Memphis Grizzlies on the eve of the draft traded starting point guard Mike Conley to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Grayson Allen, Kyle Korver, and Jae Crowder, the 23rd pick in today’s draft, and a future first-round pick.

Conley played his entire 12-year career with the Grizzlies now strengthens a Jazz team who is expected to move on from current point guard Ricky Rubio. Rubio will enter free agency this offseason and is likely to move on to another club. Rubio posted on Twitter a subtle goodbye last night “… thank you Utah.”

Speculation surrounds Rubio regarding interest from the Indiana Pacers or landing with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Conley averaged 21.1 points, 6.4 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game this past season. Conley’s contract runs through the 2020-21 season. In comparison, Rubio averaged 12.7 points and 6.1 assists for the Jazz. The move signifies the Jazz interest in challenges for the West title in the expectation of a weakened five-time defending Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors.

The Grizzlies are expected to draft their point guard of the future Ja Morant out of Murray State with the second overall pick in today’s draft. Morant averaged 24.5 points, ten assists and 5.7 rebounds per game for the Racers in only his sophomore year. Murray State made the second round of this year’s NCAA Tournament.
